Specialized Skills in Commercial Sheet Metal

Commercial HVAC

Commercial HVAC projects involve large duct systems, powerful equipment, and detailed coordination with other trades on construction sites. You’ll work in an active environment alongside electricians, plumbers, ironworkers, and other skilled professionals to build systems that keep buildings comfortable and healthy for the people inside.

These systems are essential infrastructure and are designed to last for decades, meaning your work will have a lasting impact on the community.

Architectural Sheet Metal

Architectural sheet metal combines technical skill with craftsmanship and artistry. In this area of the trade, workers create and install metal components that contribute to both the appearance and performance of buildings.

TAB Technician

Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing—commonly known as TAB—is a critical part of HVAC system performance. TAB technicians ensure that air and water delivery systems operate efficiently, quietly, and safely throughout a building. In this role, you’ll measure airflow and water flow, analyze system performance, and make adjustments so systems match the specifications outlined by the design engineer. This career path requires strong analytical thinking and attention to detail. If you enjoy math, problem-solving, and working with complex mechanical systems, TAB can be an especially rewarding specialization.

Welding

Welding plays an important role in commercial and industrial sheet metal work. In this specialty, workers help fabricate and assemble large-scale metal systems and custom-built components. These projects often last for years and contribute to industries such as automotive manufacturing, food processing, and large-scale construction. Welding specialists help build the equipment and infrastructure that keep these industries moving.

One Trade. Multiple Opportunities.

No matter which path you choose, every sheet metal worker shares the same mission: designing, building, and maintaining the systems that keep indoor air clean and comfortable.

Through the Local 1 Apprenticeship Program, you’ll gain the training, experience, and support needed to build a successful career in any of these specialized areas.
