What it Takes
one cut above the rest.

What it Takes

A career as a sheet metal worker isn’t for everyone — and that’s what makes it rewarding.

The sheet metal trade isn't easy — but that's what makes it worth it.

The Local 1 Apprenticeship Program is built for people who want more than just a paycheck. It takes focus, grit and pride in doing it right — all while learning real skills and building a career that lasts.

If you'd rather build, weld, install and fix things than sit behind a desk all day, you're already on the right track!

A good candidate working on sheet metal

The Right Mindset

Successful apprentices share a few key traits:

  • They show up ready to work.
  • They take pride in craftsmanship.
  • They’re willing to learn from experienced professionals.
  • They understand that mastering a trade takes commitment and consistency.
  • They value teamwork and contributing to something bigger than themselves.

heet metal workers bring buildings to life. They design, fabricate, install, and fine-tune HVAC systems that keep indoor air clean and comfortable. The work takes mechanical skill, sharp attention to detail, and a constant drive to improve.

What We’re Looking For

Strong candidates typically demonstrate:

  • Drive, determination and a willingness to learn
  • On time and responsible
  • Functional math and mechanical skills
  • Able to communicate effectively and work in a team environment
  • Good hand-eye coordination, spatial/form perception and manual dexterity
  • High school diploma/GED
  • Reliable transportation
